Wal-Mart has recently made a giant mistake with its Chinese
outlets. The Chinese government caught Wal-Marts in the city of Chonqqing
falsely advertising pork as organic. Officials ordered thirteen Wal-Marts in
Chonqqing to close down for 15 days and fined the company $575,000 as punishment.
Wal-Mart really hit a sore spot here because the Chinese people have recently
started purchasing significantly more organic pork due to a different swine
scandal. One of China’s largest meat processors was recently caught using pork
from pigs raised with the harmful chemical clenbuterol. Wal-Mart addressed
their mislabeling issue by sending a team to Chonqqing to initiate measures so
that another issue of this sort does not occur.
A perfect
example of an up-and coming product line that is targeting a specific
demographic is Little Black Dress Vodka. This new line, distributed by
Brown-Forman, is following the same route as Skinnygirl Cocktails and targeting
both the female and calorie conscious markets. This line set out on a mission
to “design a brand all about women, accentuating ease and superb taste,” which
is how the company plans to gain a competitive edge over vodka’s that advertise
primarily for men (such as Ketel One). Their motto is “designed for women by
women” and so far it has been working pretty well.

This post has a lot to do with the Ethics posting we had to do a few weeks back. With as many scandals and new trends as there are, so many companies are forced to choose between making more money while being unethical, or making the right decisions but loosing sales. This is definitely a rough choice for companies, especially in this economy!
